Watermark Placement Guide: Where to Position Your Watermark
Choose the perfect watermark position for your Etsy photos. Learn what works and what hurts sales.
The 9 Watermark Positions
Most watermark tools offer 9 standard positions:
Top Left
Subtle, often ignored
Top Center
Too distracting
Top Right
Decent option
Middle Left
Rarely used
Center
Avoid for products!
Middle Right
Sometimes works
Bottom Left
Good option
Bottom Center
Okay for landscapes
Bottom Right
Best for most sellers
Best Placement: Bottom-Right Corner
For Etsy product photos, bottom-right corner is the winner because:
- Doesn't cover your product
- Still clearly visible to deter theft
- Expected placement that looks professional
- Works for all image orientations
- Visible in thumbnail view
When to Use Different Placements
Center Placement
Use for: Digital downloads, printables, and artwork where you DON'T want buyers to see the full product before purchase.
Avoid for: Physical product photos where buyers need to see details.
Top-Right or Top-Left
Use for: Photos where the bottom might get cropped (Instagram, some marketplaces).
Multiple Positions
Use for: Very high-value items or when theft is rampant in your niche. Add subtle watermarks in 2-3 corners.
Opacity Guidelines
- 30-40%: Very subtle, minimal deterrent
- 40-60%: Sweet spot - visible but not distracting
- 60-80%: Bold statement, may look aggressive
- 80-100%: Only for digital previews or high-theft items
Size Guidelines
Watermark size should be proportional to your image:
- Cover 5-10% of the image area
- Large enough to read at thumbnail size
- Small enough not to dominate the photo
